City of San Luis Obispo

San  Luis Obispo, with a population just under 50,000 is one of California's oldest cities, and is indeed a "little slice of paradise," offering a vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, entertainment venues, shopping and a variety of both new and older boutique hotels.

SLO  town, as it is fondly referred to, is Central Coasts tourist destination with attractions such as Cal Poly Performing Arts Center, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa,  Madonna Inn, year 'round Thursday night Farmers Market, and on the first Friday of each month, San Luis Obispo's After Dark Gallery Walk to name just a few.

San Luis Obispo is also home to California Polytechnic State University, which has a student body of right around 20,000.

A large number of Cal Poly graduates have gone on to build world renowned companies which are based out of San Luis Obispo - rumored to be the new Silicon Valley due to all the startups.

San Luis Obispo was founded in 1772 by Spanish  missionaries, largely due to the proximity to accessible water, good soil and mild weather.  In 1894, when the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived, the growth began.  California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in 1901 started as a small teachers college.  Due to the location being halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo became a tourist destination with the improvement of Highway 101 in the 1920's.

San Luis Obispo is often at the top of the "Best of" lists for various  travel magazines, and has been named "Best Small Town," "Healthiest Cities," "Friendliest City," and referred to as the "Happiest City in America" by Oprah Winfrey.

Buying a home and living in San Luis Obispo is living a dream.  Community events are plentiful and include the weekly Friday night Concert in the Park throughout summer months; numerous art festivals, International Film Festival,  Annual Holiday Parade, San Luis Obispo Marathon and a plethora of fundraising events including my favorite - Goldens in the Park, to benefit the Humane Society.
